I was born in Anchorage, Alaska on April 12th, 1983, via c-section. I was supposed to be born on Friday, April 13th, but when my mom realized this she decided to go get me a day early.
I grew up mostly in Valdez, a quiet little town by the Prince William Sound, about six hours from Anchorage. In any direction you look, you see a vast mountain range, a glacier, or the ocean. There’s one road in and one road out. It’s not like you can just keep driving to the next town. Alaska is beautiful and rugged but very secluded, cut off from society and the rest of the U.S., literally and figuratively. As a young boy I used to look off in the distance at that one road as it twisted and turned through the mountains, and I wondered if I’d ever make it out of this town or if I’d be stuck in the middle of nowhere for the rest of my life.
